I have two markets planned this month. The first one is this Saturday at VisArts on Main Street. It’s a great opportunity to come check out this amazing art space and the community that thrives there.
The following weekend I’ll be at City Stadium for the Carytown Holiday Market. Thank god the weather is supposed to warm up so hopefully it’ll be a great day to get out on the town and check out all the great art happening in this city.

I’m totally obsessed with these squished and carved cups fresh out of the kiln. My friend @prettydirtceramics was so sweet and invited me to fire some of my pieces in her kiln and for the first time in a long while I was soooooooo happy with how my stuff came out. Although the inside of these cups were glazed with a pink glaze, all the pink burned out except at the very bottom. But it left a crackly celedon looking inside that I think looks beautiful against the white textured outside. I can’t stop touching them! Thank u Mary for helping me get out of my pottery slump. I feel like I can let go of my motto - porcelain is dead to me - and get back to the joy of creating!

My many moods expressed thru the bottoms of my mugs. If I turned them over you’d see that all the rims warped in the last firing. I still don’t know why. Maybe a funky couple of bags of porcelain. I’d guess my technique in throwing, drying or attaching handles but that hasn’t been a problem in the past so who knows. Did something happen in the kiln? I know porcelain is super finicky and can turn on you on a dime so I’m not sure I’ll ever know the answer here. My clay friends are so supportive and tell me they’re beautiful anyway so they’re coming to my winter markets so I just hope other folks feel the same.

Working with clay has been giving me soooo much material for practicing letting go and acceptance. In these last two months more things have gone wrong than I ever could have imagined. So what to do? I try to figure out what happened and move forward but there has been a bit of mourning in the process. I think that’s all just part of. And just trying so hard to remember why I play with clay anyway. It was all for the process. I just enjoy that artistic piece of it where I can imagine new pieces and then execute as best I can, put new ideas out on my clay and run wild with my imagination. Although I can get attached to the final piece, the truth is does it really matter if that part exists? I don’t know the answer but I just want to keep enjoying what I’m doing so trying to stay cognizant of why I’m working with clay in the first place.

So I picked out a new color to work with. I love the warmth of brown against a cool white. I tried teddy bear brown before which I loved but it burns out at the final glaze fire leaving it streaky. This is a caramel color that should darken up considerably in the final firing. Anyway, we’ll soon find out as they are firing right now.

So I just picked up a bunch of mugs out of the kiln today and am feeling pretty devastated - not to be dramatic. Almost all of them warped significantly in the process. Honestly I don’t understand how it works. I know porcelain is super finicky but they start off round and I bisque them and they’re round and then they come out of final firing and they’re super wonky. I honestly should just show them here but I had to put them out of sight for now for my mental health. So instead you get this nice video carving a mug. God knows what it will look like at the end of the process.

I’be been watching The Great British Baking Show 🎂💛and a million things are always going wrong on their bakes which strangely makes me feel better. I suppose it’s part of the process in any art form so just trying to take it in stride and move forward.
